Chelsea may have left a couple of goals out on the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium pitch tonight but Enzo Maresca felt it was a step in the right direction from the Blues after acknowledging his side need to improve defensively.
The Blues lead the Premier League when it comes to finding the net, alongside Arsenal, with 18 goals scored in our ten games so far.
That attacking threat was evident once again in North London as we recorded an expected goals (xG) of 2.92, even if we had to settle for Joao Pedro's solitary finish in the first half.
But it was the clean sheet which pleased Maresca the most, as Spurs recorded a paltry 0.05 xG as Robert Sanchez dominated his area throughout and was only called on to make one save of note.
When asked if he was a bit frustrated not to have scored more goals, Maresca replied: ‘In any case, I’m happy with the 1-0 and the three points, easily because we kept a clean sheet because it’s what we need for the future.
'We know that we are a team that is going to score goals but we need to do better defensively.’
Chelsea's pressing was outstanding throughout the game and it was typical destructive play from Moises Caicedo which led to Joao Pedro's goal just after the half-hour mark.
The Blues look to dominate the opposition both on the ball and out of possession, and Maresca highlighted how tonight was not a one-off.
He said: ‘I think the performance was very good on and off the ball. The way we tried to press was very important but I think the game against Liverpool was very good.
'We need that if we are going to be close to the top, defensively solid. We know we always score goals but we need to concede less goals.’
