Enzo Maresca wants to see significant improvement from his Chelsea team when we play Bournemouth in a contest he is expecting will bear similarities to the Leeds match.

The Blues travel to the South Coast off the back of Wednesday’s 3-1 defeat at Elland Road and what Maresca labelled as one of the most disappointing performances of the season.

Responding positively to that setback is the head coach’s priority now. The way the Cherries play means we cannot afford to be below our best again, and Maresca is determined for his side to avoid the mistakes made against Leeds.

‘Bournemouth will be a similar game to Leeds, that’s why we need to be better,’ said Maresca.

‘They are intense; Leeds were very intense. I said after the game they were better than us in all the aspects and hopefully we can learn from that and be better tomorrow.

‘I didn’t see the players yesterday but I watched the game back and for sure, we did many things badly. Probably, we paid a bill for playing one hour with ten players against Arsenal.

‘We also paid a bill in terms of Leeds away as, in some ways, it can be more complicated than the previous game. As I said, we watched the game and there are some things we need to avoid in the future.’

Maresca admitted if he had his time again he would have selected a different starting XI at Elland Road, in particular choosing to play Josh Acheampong in his back four. The head coach also knows hindsight is a wonderful thing.

‘Analysing them we saw most of the time they were playing long balls for [Dominic] Calvert-Lewin and [Lukas] Nmecha, so we preferred physicality to win more duels,' said Maresca. 'But even with that, we lost most of them.

‘It’s always the same thing. When you pick 11 players and you win, everything is fine. When you pick 11 players and lose, there is always a reason why.

‘Playing with ten players for one hour and then two days later going to Leeds, it’s not the best situation for us. But in the future, if this happens, we need to do better and do many things better.’
