Enzo Maresca says Chelsea must be ready for one of the hardest away games of the season this afternoon, as we face a 'strong and intense' Newcastle United side at St James' Park.

Eddie Howe's side sit 12th in the Premier League table ahead of today's game in the north east, yet their home record is sixth-best in the top flight.

The Magpies have won five of their league eight outings at St James' Park and sealed a place in the Carabao Cup semi-finals on Wednesday by overcoming Fulham in midweek.

Our last victory at Newcastle came in October 2021, when a pair of thunderous drives from skipper Reece James helped us to a 3-0 win.

However, we have the second-best away record in the Premier League this term, with 14 points claimed.

The Blues have also won our previous three Saturday lunchtime kick-offs this season – Fulham, Nottingham Forest and Burnley – but Maresca is not putting too much stock in when the game begins. He knows a difficult challenge awaits, regardless of the start time.

He said: ‘For me, it’s always difficult. Night or day, they are a very good team and have a very good manager who is doing a fantastic job for years. They are strong and intense, so no matter the kick-off time, it’s going to be a difficult game.

‘Yes, 100 per cent [it’s one of the hardest away games], but it’s not only for Chelsea, many teams drop points there.

'This season, Manchester City lost at Newcastle, Arsenal were losing until near the end, but managed to score twice. So for many clubs, it has been a very difficult pitch because they have good players, a good manager, and a good environment.’
