Chelsea FC Women take on Wolfsburg this afternoon in the second leg of our Champions League quarter-final and captain Magda Eriksson is confident the Blues can overcome last year’s finalists and seal a spot in the last four.
Eriksson skippered the Blues to our first ever victory over Wolfsburg in last week’s home leg, as goals from Sam Kerr and Pernille Harder gave Chelsea a 2-1 advantage.
A penalty from Wolfsburg’s Dominque Janssen means our German opponents hold an away goal heading into today's fixture but Eriksson believes the Blues have enough quality to progress into the semi-finals.
She said: ‘We’ve been in this competition for a long time now and we know it’s one big game and not two games, so we have to treat this fixture as almost like the first half.
‘It gave us a win and a good platform before the next game, but we can’t treat this like anything else, it’s still game on.
‘We know there is still 90 minutes left to play, we know it’s going to be tough and we know it’s important that we look at the last game and we improve on that and learn.
‘Looking at the strikers we have and the offensive abilities in the squad, I think we are very likely to create chances and that is what we are going to go for.’
If Chelsea are to come out on top in this afternoon’s clash with Wolfsburg, it will be the third time that the Blues have reached the Champions League semi-finals and Eriksson believes getting past last year’s finalist will represent significant progress.
‘It would be a massive achievement for us,’ Eriksson added. ‘Wolfsburg have a great history in this tournament, so to be able to go through would be a fantastic achievement.
‘It would be a great stepping stone to what we want to achieve and what our goals and aspirations are with this club. It would mean everything but there is still a lot of work to be done but I’m very confident that we can do it.’
