Chelsea captain Magda Eriksson says we have to match the aggression and tempo we showed in the second half of our crushing 4-0 win over Manchester City when we return to Champions League action on Thursday.
Boss Emma Hayes admitted we were slightly below our usual standards in the first half as we recorded our first-ever away Barclays FA Women’s Super League win against City on Sunday.
But both Hayes and Swedish defender Eriksson agreed that the team’s character, resilience and ability to step up in the vital moments was a telling factor in our sixth consecutive WSL victory.
Eriksson highlighted a sensational one-on-one save by goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger from Caroline Weir’s low shot when the score was 1-0 and also the slick counter-attack that ended with Sam Kerr grabbing our second goal just before the break.
‘The scoreline reflects the game in some ways but not in all ways,' Eriksson said. ‘We struggled a bit in the first half.
‘We didn’t really start off the way we wanted to but we managed to get out of the half at 2-0 after a fantastic save. Players are showing up when we need them to in the big moments.
‘To get that goal just before half-time was really good. We went out a completely different team in the second half and played some fantastic football and deserved the win.
‘We have had some good and some tough games against City so to finally get that away win in the WSL is really important for the team. Everyone put in a great shift.’
The ruthless nature of the victory and emphatic scoreline did not stop Eriksson demanding more from her team-mates when we take on Servette at Kingsmeadow in our fourth Champions League fixture of the season on Thursday.
‘After the first goal against City we dropped off a little bit and that’s not us,’ said the 28-year-old, whose headed goal wrapped up the scoring at 4-0.
‘The more we can play like we did when we were on the front foot and really aggressive, that is when we are at our best.
‘It was good that we kept going for it. We weren’t happy with the 2-0 or 3-0, we wanted more and more and a clean sheet is massive for the team.
‘And I don’t score often so it was nice to make it 4-0 and really take the edge off the game!
‘We have a couple more days now between games which is good for us to get some rest. But then it’s all focus on Servette and keeping our unbeaten record going in the group and really going for the three points.’
