Chelsea FC Women’s Erin Cuthbert and Pernille Harder spoke on the importance of Sunday’s win against Birmingham City and our final game of the Barclays FA Women’s Super League season against Manchester United this Sunday...

Pernille Harder scored the winner with 20 minutes remaining after the Blues were awarded a penalty for handball in the area.

The Dane stepped up and coolly slotted home from 12 yards, sending Emily Ramsey the wrong way in the process.

The win means Chelsea sit top of the WSL with one game remaining, with our last league game of the season taking place at a sold-out Kingsmeadow against Manchester United on Sunday.

Cuthbert was brought on for the second half and was awarded the Barclays Player of the Match following an impressive performance in midfield.

Speaking at full-time, our number 22 said: ‘When you come on for the game, you have to bring a level of calm to the team almost and a bit of control to the game but for me, it’s quite unique that I don’t feel any pressure as a football player.

‘I just go out and play and I don’t get nervous before games. You give your best and for me my best is always enough no matter what happens in the game. Just knowing that I was going to go out there, I only had 45 minutes, so you give it all and hopefully it gets you across the line, and tonight it did.’

There were tough conditions at St. Andrew’s on Sunday evening, with heavy rain falling for a majority of the 90 minutes.

‘I don’t think it mattered what boots you had on, it was really really slippy,’ Cuthbert explained.

‘I think there’s a consciousness in the back of your mind. It’s quite nervy if you get the ball - for me as a pivot, if I get the ball off one of the centre backs, one slip and they are through on goal.

‘You really have to be careful and you almost have to play the conditions a little bit. I felt we did that and got a bit more control of the game. I think once we went 1-0, bar the save at the end and a couple of corners, we were much in control and started managing the game a bit better.’

Harder echoed the comments from her tea-mate and explained what she felt as she saw her penalty hit the back of the net.

‘It was very nice to see it go in! Relief and three more points,’ our No.23 exclaimed. ‘It’s so important. We have to win the rest of the games to win the title so it was three really important points.

‘I feel confident and now we give everything we have in the last game.’

Sunday’s game against Manchester United kicks off at 12 noon at Kingsmeadow. A win for Hayes’ side would see us clinch the title for the third consecutive year. Before then, Arsenal play their game in hand against Tottenham on Wednesday, knowing a defeat would also hand the Blues the title.
