After netting with a superb strike from distance against West Ham United, Chelsea’s Erin Cuthbert explained why collecting another three points on Sunday was particularly important for the Blues.

The Blues put four goals past the Hammers, continuing our 100 per cent winning record in the Women’s Super League this season. The experienced midfielder was delighted not only with the win, but also with a dominant performance in Dagenham.

‘It was super important,’ said Cuthbert. ‘We wanted to create a little bit of a gap up at the top, to give us a bit of a buffer.

‘We’ve got a bit of an unbeaten streak going at the moment. Everybody wants to be the team that beats that, and I think we have to start hard and fast in games, which we hadn’t been doing.

‘We wanted a bit of a different approach today. We wanted more counter pressures and to win the ball back in higher areas, and win our duels a little bit more. I think that helped us create a lot of chances that maybe we’ve not been creating in the past couple of weeks.

‘It was a good game overall. We implemented a lot of stuff that we’ve been doing in training.’

The Blues invested in Mara Alber, Ellie Carpenter, Livia Peng and Alyssa Thompson during the summer transfer window, and with Sam Kerr also having returned from injury, Cuthbert explained how high the competition between the players can be in training sessions.

Our Women’s Champions League campaign begins on Wednesday 8 October with an away trip to FC Twente. The Scotland international went on to explain that those waiting for playing time would soon get their opportunity.

‘It’s great to be part of this squad, and with the amount of goals that different players have chipped in with today, and the chances we’ve had from players coming off the bench, it makes a difference.

‘Everyone’s fighting for their shirt, and there’s fierce competition in training every week. We love each other like family, but compete like nobody’s business!

You’ve got no idea how fierce that competition is, week in, week out. That creates healthy competition and good performances like we saw on the pitch today.

‘The squad depth is brilliant, but it’s absolutely needed and key. With only one game a week, it’s maybe difficult for players to keep their heads in the game, but they’ve got to be ready and know their moment is coming. Our October and November is packed with games, so everybody is going to get their chance.

Before that Champions League campaign begins, we travel to Manchester United for our fifth WSL match of the season. Cuthbert warned that Marc Skinner’s side would provide a tough test for the Blues.

‘I’ve been watching their games,’ she concluded. ‘I watched the Champions League qualifying games they were involved in, and they’re looking really good.

‘It’s always a tough game when we play up in Manchester, they’re always right up for it, and I’m sure it’ll be no different on Friday night. We need to be at the top of our game, that’s for sure.’
