Erin Cuthbert says Chelsea will need to match Liverpool's physicality as a 'minimum standard' in order to come away with three points from Sunday's Women's Super League meeting in St. Helens.

Gareth Taylor's side have endured a difficult start to the campaign, and currently sit second from bottom of the WSL with just one point from their seven opening matches.

Cuthbert believes the form guide will go out of the window when Chelsea arrive in town, and pointed to the match at Prenton Park at the end of Emma Hayes' final season, when a 92nd-minute winner from Gemma Bonner handed the Reds a 4-3 victory.

'I've watched a lot of Liverpool's matches,' explained the midfielder. 'I watched the Man City game, and I thought they were very unlucky not to grab the goal at the end. They were offside by a fraction, and they had chances to actually win that game.

'I'm under no illusions. It's going to be a tough game. They could have picked up points, and it almost adds more weight to them that they're playing us. They know the history they have playing Chelsea at home as well. So it's about getting everybody up for the game.'

Cuthbert thinks the key to avoiding a repeat of that seven-goal thriller in 2024 will be to ensure the home side do not outwork Chelsea on the day.

She explained how if the Blues can match Liverpool's intensity, the quality of the play can then shine through.

'It'll be a physical battle, continued Cuthbert. 'It's always the same when you play Liverpool. They run a lot, and they work tirelessly for each other. That's got to be our minimum standard. So we match that, and then we let the football do the talking.'

Chelsea triumphed in Europe on Tuesday night with a 4-0 win over St. Polten, but faced a long trip back from Austria before preparations for Liverpool could begin.

With that in mind, Cuthbert explained how the team's squad depth and recovery plans will negate any effects of the travel.

'We have to regroup,' she said. 'We have to get back into domestic focus again. We always know that Liverpool away is always a tough fixture in the calendar.

'It's all about recovering well, getting some good sleep, getting some good rest and nutrition, and getting back to full fitness for Sunday.

'Competing on all four fronts with only eleven players is so difficult, so it's definitely a squad effort, and it will be vital at different times of the season.'

The Blues battled to a 1-1 draw away at Arsenal last Saturday, while title rivals Manchester City picked up three points against Everton.

That allowed Andree Jeglertz's side to leapfrog Chelsea to take top spot in the WSL table by just one point, but Cuthbert is relishing the challenge of a tighter race this season.

'Obviously, we're currently second, so it's a super tight title race, but I think that's what everybody enjoys. It's always going to be like that.

'That's football when you play in one of the top leagues in the world. I'm enjoying the competition within the team. I think it's really making us better every single week when it comes to the games.'
