Nobody epitomises the spirit and quality of Chelsea more than Erin Cuthbert. It is little wonder, then, that supporters voted her as Player of the Season, even if the Scot is a little surprised at receiving the award for a second time.

Cuthbert has been instrumental for Sonia Bompastor's side this term, producing consistently high-quality performances in the heart of our midfield. There are many reasons Chelsea have gone unbeaten domestically and reached the semi-finals of the Champions League this season. The form and desire of Cuthbert is most certainly one.

Speaking to us after picking up her award on Sunday evening, the 26-year-old was typically humble.

‘A number of my team-mates could have won the award with the season we’ve had,’ she recognises, before going on to express her emotions after receiving the prize.

‘Honestly, I’m a bit surprised, but I’m incredibly proud the fans have voted for me because I always like to think I give 100 per cent in training and in every game I play in,’ says Cuthbert.

‘I try to represent the badge as best as possible. Honestly, I’m not sure it’s my very best year. I had a tough gig with breaking my rib and getting injured in pre-season, and trying to continue the season playing with niggles is the part that people don’t see.

‘They think you’re 100 per cent perfect all the time and don’t see what happens down at the training ground. The bottom line is that I think I’ve got more to come - and I want more for this Chelsea team. I think we can achieve more, and I’m excited about what’s to come.’

Cuthbert is grateful to those who have come before and set such high standards at this club. She namechecks Katie Chapman, Maren Mjelde, Claire Rafferty and Karen Carney, all bona fide Chelsea greats she had the privilege of playing alongside early in her Blues career. Cuthbert stands among them now.

‘Every time we wear the shirt, we have to leave it in a better place,’ she stresses.

Of course, Cuthbert’s eternal thanks also go to those who watch her weekly, and keep her head high on the occasions tough times do come around.

‘Without the fans football is nothing, and we’ve really needed them this year,’ says the Scot.

'We’ve grown in numbers - the numbers we’ve got in away sections, at Stamford Bridge, and selling out Kingsmeadow repeatedly - I’m really proud of the support we’ve had. It’s got us through some tight, tight games, and I think especially the away end at Man City when I scored that goal, that felt a proper footballing away end.

‘I can always hear them shouting my name and, even if I make a mistake, they encourage me. So I can’t thank them enough for giving me the confidence to flourish in a Chelsea shirt, and I hope I repay them as best I can.’

Cuthbert has most certainly done that this season. It has been yet another history-breaking one for Chelsea, and we could even break new ground by avoiding defeat against Liverpool and completing an entire WSL campaign unbeaten.

Whatever happens at the Bridge on Saturday, Cuthbert says it will take some time before she can appreciate the magnitude of a sixth successful title.

‘I don’t think it’ll sink in until I’m on my summer holidays, the dust has settled, and I’m sitting on a sun lounger,’ she smiles.

‘That is when it will settle because until then it’s pure business mode. When it finally does settle, I’ll be extremely proud of the journey we’ve had because six titles in a row is some level of dominance.’

And Cuthbert has been here for the lot.
