It doesn’t get much bigger than a London derby in a Champions League knockout tie, and Erin Cuthbert says it is games such as the one that awaits us at the Emirates on Tuesday she dreamed of playing in growing up.
The Blues make the short journey to the north of the capital looking to make a statement of intent in the first leg of our quarter-final against Arsenal, before the teams reconvene at the Bridge next Wednesday.
Ahead of a tantalising derby with a European twist, Erin Cuthbert joined Sonia Bompastor on media duties at Cobham and explained why she is so looking forward to the next chapter in the Chelsea vs Arsenal rivalry.
‘I certainly really relish the opportunity to play in the Champions League quarter-final again,’ said Cuthbert.
‘It's a proud, proud moment to be a Chelsea player. I love playing in the Champions League, it's different to playing domestically. When it's games over two legs it has a little bit of a different mentality to it.
‘There's nothing better than playing a game under the lights. Personally I love an evening kick-off, I love the dew on the grass. It's great. It's always a great atmosphere at the Emirates as well. They really support the home side, and I enjoy the hostility of it.
‘So it's super exciting to be involved in these games. These are the games that when you're a young kid, you grow up watching on TV and to have that access now is brilliant.’
The Blues travel to north London having won four of our past five games in all competitions and lifted the League Cup with victory over Manchester United.
Cuthbert believes a positive outcome in this tie will only help confidence levels in the closing weeks of the campaign, and she says the Blues are well placed to achieve that despite the busy schedule.
‘It can be a catalyst for momentum going into the last games of the season,’ said the Scot. ‘It's an exciting period. It's the business end, the part that everybody wants to be involved in.
‘As a football player, when you play so many games you can feel your legs, but when you know you've got a Champions League at stake and you're playing the biggest games, you don't feel anything when it comes to the game. You're just fully focused and razor sharp ready to go.’
