Erin Cuthbert says it's imperative Chelsea 'start fast and set our intentions early' in tonight's Champions League quarter-final second leg against Arsenal, with the Blues needing to overhaul a two-goal deficit at Stamford Bridge in our bid to reach the last four.
Sonia Bompastor's side was beaten 3-1 by the Gunners in north London last week, so an uphill challenge awaits this evening in SW6 as we attempt to make it through to the semi-finals.
However, Cuthbert is confident the Blues can surmount the task at hand and believes there are parallels to draw and lessons to learn from the same stage last season, when we roared back from losing 2-0 to Manchester City in the first leg to win 3-0 at Stamford Bridge and advance.
‘We can definitely draw upon that,’ said the Scot. ‘What I draw upon from last year, when we played Manchester City at home in the return leg, is the fast start.
‘We saw what the first half looked like last year and we want to be at it from the first whistle. The first goal is going to be really, really important in the game because we have to get two just to draw level. So it’s vital we start fast and set our intentions early.
‘We really threatened them in the first half last week and created a number of chances. We won the ball back in really dangerous areas, so that's definitely something we want to be focused on.’
Cuthbert also revealed what the mood in the dressing room has been like ahead of this huge fixture. Our dramatic victory over Aston Villa at the weekend has boosted confidence, and the 27-year-old knows staying in the tie and making use of home support will be pivotal to achieving a memorable comeback.
‘There was a conversation after the game against Arsenal and also after Sunday's game that we have the belief that we can do it,’ said Cuthbert, who will wear the captain’s armband tonight in the absence of Millie Bright.
‘We've done it before, but we're under no illusions it's a tough one. Arsenal have been really sticky opponents for us this season, but there's a little bit of turn of luck that I think the first goal will be really important in the game. We have to make sure it's to us and we need to use the fans to get behind us as much as possible.’
