Estevao Willian says the graft he has put in at Cobham since signing for Chelsea played a crucial role in his solo strike against Crystal Palace.
The 18-year-old opened the scoring at Selhurst Park after racing from inside his own half and finishing with aplomb. His pace to get away from Tyrick Mitchell, one of the quickest full-backs in the league, was impressive, his skill and composure in front of goal equally so.
As the Brazilian explained, the goal did not simply stem from raw ability.
‘I’ve been working a lot on speed,’ said Estevao.
‘I know speed and physicality are important in the Premier League, so I’ve been training on that and it’s good to see it has results already.
‘It was an important goal because it helped us control the game, which was the most important thing against a difficult opponent. We did that in tough moments.’
Estevao is only a few months into his Chelsea career but he has already made a sizeable impression. Yesterday’s goal was his second in the league and his sixth overall.
And it is not only his speed and physicality that has progressed. Estevao identified other aspects of his play that have come on leaps and bounds since he arrived in England.
'My understanding of the game is what has improved the most since I arrived at Chelsea: knowing when to accelerate, when to hold the ball.
‘This has really improved, and also one-v-one situations. The team really trusts me with these.’
