The bitterly cold English winter may be a world away from the sun-soaked Brazilian city of Sao Paulo, but it hasn't hindered Estevao Willian's sense of belonging at Chelsea. As his performances suggest, he feels firmly at home in London...
It was less than a year ago that Estevao truly announced himself to Chelsea supporters – and he did so while wearing the green and white of Palmeiras.
The Brazilian's goal against Chelsea at the Club World Cup only added to the expectation surrounding the 18-year-old ahead of his impending switch to Stamford Bridge. That he has delivered on that, with match-winning goals and game-altering moments produced, is a testament to his ability.
His name is now regularly sung by Chelsea supporters home and away, and his last-minute winner against Liverpool and wonderful individual strike against Barcelona are just high-profile highlights in his already impressive back catalogue.
Yet Estevao knows these moments have only been written into the early chapters of his Chelsea story. He appreciates the need to grow and that he remains in formative stages of his development.
His focus is on continuous improvement – including working on his English – while also enjoying each day as a Chelsea player.
‘It’s been such a great opportunity since I arrived here,' he explains. 'I’m very thankful to Chelsea and I’m very happy to be here.
'Chelsea have given me everything I need to keep evolving. Every day, I feel stronger, more skilful, more agile and quicker – I’m very happy.
‘I’m even understanding English more every day. I have two classes a week, and I’m working really hard. I’m now able to have small conversations, which has been really helpful.’
Moving across the world – and acclimatising to a new climate and a new culture – would be understandably difficult for any 18-year-old. And there have been challenges for Estevao as he adapts to his new life in England.
Yet each has been taken in stride by the Brazil international, who highlights the important role his family has played in enabling him to shine at Stamford Bridge.
‘The hardest challenge has been the weather, I even saw snow for the first time recently,' he laughs. 'The sun and heat are standard almost all year in Brazil, but even when it’s cold there, it’s nothing like the temperatures here!
'The winter has been cold, but even though it’s very different from Brazil, I’m getting used to it. My family have been very important over this time. Over Christmas, for example, I was with them, and it was great because we were together.’
With the foundations of his Chelsea career now firmly in place, Estevao continues to flourish in blue. He has scored in each of our four different competitions this season (Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup and Carabao Cup) and has netted seven in total.
Earlier in the campaign, he also became just the third teenager to score in his first three Champions League starts. The other two? Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe.
‘The Champions League is something that I have always followed, so to be able to play in a Chelsea shirt in this competition has been unbelievable,' Estevao says with yet another flash of his familiar smile. 'It’s extremely exciting.
‘I’ve enjoyed some big moments like against Barcelona and Liverpool. I’ve really enjoyed those big games and those moments. Now we just want to go as far as possible in these competitions.'
In addition to his family, Estevao has credited two players, in particular, for helping him settle quickly at Chelsea: Joao Pedro and Andrey Santos.
Both have taken their own journeys to the Blues' first team after moving to England as Brazilian teenagers, and their experiences and camaraderie have proved invaluable for the winger as he forges his own path.
‘Those two have been a huge part of my journey here – they’ve been fundamental to my development so far,’ he says.
‘I’d say we’ve been pretty inseparable. Without them, I’m sure it would have been much harder to adjust. So, I’m really grateful.’
