Amid scenes of celebration inside Stamford Bridge and with a beaming smile on his face, Estevao Willian put into words the significance of his stunning solo goal that helped Chelsea defeat Barcelona: ‘It was definitely the most special moment in my career.’
Very few 18-year-olds have a highlight reel quite like the Brazilian. Yet Estevao's strike at Stamford Bridge – his third in three Champions League starts – will live long in his and Chelsea supporters' memory.
Receiving a pass 25 yards from goal, Estevao advanced into the area and showcased his quick feet by jinking past Pau Cubarsi. He then held off the covering Keita Balde, shifted the ball onto his right foot and thundered a shot into the roof of the net. Barcelona Joan Garcia had no time to react.
The goal doubled our advantage, established by a Jules Kounde own goal, and was later added to by Liam Delap's first strike in the Champions League. It was another night that highlighted those in blue are capable of producing on the biggest of stages.
‘I don’t really have the words to sum up how I’m feeling right now,' said Estevao shortly after the final whistle. 'It was the perfect night and I’m grateful to God for making everything happen for me. '
'The goal was all very quick; it happened before I knew it. I saw the space, wiggled my way through and scored.
‘It was definitely the most special moment in my career and I hope I keep scoring more in the years ahead. I’m so happy, also because my family were here watching as well.’
Estevao's name was sung throughout our 3-0 victory; a sign of the affection the Chelsea faithful have for the teenage Brazilian international.
Through his performances on the pitch and affable demeanour off it, Estevao has done his part in building that relationship, and he is grateful for the backing he has received.
‘From the moment I arrived at Chelsea, I have felt a connection with the fans,' he said. 'I’m just so happy I can score for them and I hope there are many more.
'I am enjoying things very much because football is the thing I love to do the most. Playing football will never be a burden for me because it makes me happy.'
