We may only be a few short months into Estevao Willian’s Chelsea career, but it has taken the Brazilian no time at all to endear himself to Blues supporters everywhere.
With a huge smile on his face and a swagger in his play that gets fans off their seats, Estevao has been a joy to watch since signing from Palmeiras. He has already provided an indelible moment, the injury-time winner against Liverpool, and at just 18 years old there is a palpable sense his trajectory is only soaring upwards.
Estevao is grateful for the warm welcome, something he emphasised when asked what message he had for Blues fans.
‘I thank you for all the love I’ve received from you and all the support I’ve had at Stamford Bridge,’ he said.
‘I’m so happy, it’s a dream to be here and to play at the Bridge. Thank you for that love and I hope to repay you out on the pitch.'
He added: ‘Since I’ve been here at the club, the reception I’ve had from everybody – the players, the coaching staff, the fans – has made me feel really at home. I’m really happy and I’m settling in quicker than I could have thought and I’m delighted with that.’
Estevao says his English lessons are going well and he is happy to be learning a new language. He laughs when he says the other Brazilians in the squad gently tease him when he can’t think of a word!
On the pitch the attacker has already been able to celebrate three goals, the first of which was that winner against Liverpool. ‘It’s hard to sleep after a moment like that with the adrenaline flowing, but I was just so happy,’ he says.
He is far from done, though. It is early days at Chelsea but wherever Enzo Maresca selects him in our attack, Estevao is determined to make an impact.
‘My favourite thing is to play football so of course I will do what I can to help Chelsea, whether that is on the wing or inside. I’m comfortable in both positions and I am happy to do whatever is best for my club.
‘So long as every day I work hard in training and prepare for matches the right way, I’m just happy to be out hoping to improve and win every game.’
With that mentality and so much natural ability, Blues fans can expect to show Estevao plenty more love in the months and years ahead.
