Denmark, with another quality contribution from Andreas Christensen, won comfortably against Wales in the first knockout game of Euro 2020.

A goal in each half by Kasper Dolberg, who plays his club football for Nice, and late goals by wing-back Joakim Maehle and striker Martin Braithwaite secured a 4-0 passage into the quarter-finals with Wales limited to just one shot on target.Playing in Ajax’s stadium in Amsterdam, by half-time it was clear Denmark were well on top although Wales started the game the brighter side.Gareth Bale went close inside 10 minutes and Christensen and his colleague at the back had to make a succession of blocks on shots. The Danes soon grew into the game and scored midway through the first half thanks to a fine strike from outside the area by Dolberg. After a penetrating passing move, he curled with power into the bottom corner.

Following the goal it was constant pressure at that end of the pitch, with corner after corner, and the sense the game was not going Wales’ way was exacerbated when they lost Swansea’s Connor Roberts to injury before the break. In added time before the interval, Maehle went close to a second for the Danes when he shot into the side-netting but it took only three minutes after the restart for that goal to come. Dolberg grabbed his second after a poor clearance from a cross by substitute Neco Williams.Christensen had moved into midfield during the first half, strengthening the grip his side had on the game, and he was still back to cover when Wales did launch an overdue attack and was also the man in the right place to block a fierce Daniel James shot.

The Danes were a whisker away from a third with a curler from Mathias Jensen and then when Braithwaite hit the post, and a margin of victory that did not unduly flatter them was secured by a smart finish by Maehle, and then a stoppage-time strike from Braithwaite that was originally ruled offside but given by VAR.

They now play the winners of the Netherlands versus Czech Republic tie next Saturday in Baku. With the Welsh exit, Ethan Ampadu’s participation in Euro 2020 is at an end with one start and two sub appearances to his name. He was suspended for the Denmark game following his red card in the previous match. Wales had Harry Wilson sent off close to the end of the match today.
