It looked as though England were heading for a Euro 2024 exit with just two minutes of injury-time remaining, but a remarkable turn of events saw Conor Gallagher and Cole Palmer’s Three Lions progress to the quarter-finals with a 2-1 win over Slovakia.

Ivan Schranz’s goal on 25 minutes looked set to send Gareth Southgate’s men home heading into the fifth minute of injury-time at the Arena AufSchalke in Gelsenkirchen.

But an exceptional overhead kick from Jude Bellingham sent the game into extra-time and in the first minute of the additional half an hour, Harry Kane headed in what proved to be the winning goal.

England will now face Switzerland in the quarter-final at Düsseldorf Arena on Saturday night (5pm BST kick-off) following their impressive 2-0 win over Italy on Saturday.

Having started the final group game against Slovenia, Gallagher was back on the bench this evening, as Kobbie Mainoo came into the midfield.

The Three Lions went behind midway through the first half when Schranz was slipped through and he slotted low past Jordan Pickford with the outside of his boot.

England thought they had equalised when Phil Foden tapped in Kieran Trippier’s low cross five minutes after the restart but the Manchester City forward had strayed offside and it was ruled out following a VAR review.

Palmer was introduced on the right wing on 66 minutes, with Bukayo Saka moving to left-back, and the Chelsea forward made an immediate impact, creating a chance soon after his arrival.

It looked as though England would exit the competition as they struggled to create clear openings and that feeling was heightened inside the final ten minutes of regulation time when Declan Rice saw a shot from outside the area rebound off the post and Kane sent the follow-up over the bar.

Six minutes of injury-time were shown on the board at the end of 90 minutes and as the Three Lions entered the final two of those, it seemed all hope was gone.

But when Kyle Walker sent in a long throw, it was flicked on by Chelsea Academy graduate Marc Guehi and Bellingham produced an outstanding overhead kick from around 12 yards to keep England in the competition.

And before Three Lions’ fans in the stadium and those at home could compose themselves, the feeling of disbelief reached new levels as in the opening minute of extra-time, Palmer’s corner was only half-cleared, Eberechi Eze hit a volley into the ground, Ivan Toney headed back into the six-yard box and Kane was there at the far post to head home what proved to be the winning goal.

There was a heart-in-the-mouth moment for England when Slovakia flashed a ball across the face of the goal in the 105th minute and Peter Pekarik slid in, only to send his shot from close range over the bar.

Gallagher was introduced at half-time of extra-time and worked hard to keep out Slovakia’s attacks.

Palmer almost created a third England goal in the dying moments to ensure the win, when he picked out Toney on the counter-attack, but the Brentford striker fired his shot from 18 yards over the bar.
