The form
Chelsea are fresh from clinching the Continental Tyres League Cup for a second successive year after thumping Bristol City 6-0 in Sunday’s final. Sam Kerr notched a hat-trick in style, Fran Kirby got a brace while Guro Reiten scored late on. Our Australian forward got the final underway after two minutes when she slotted in a Kirby cross and minutes later the two linked up again for Kerr to tap in at the back post. The No.20 celebrated with her impressive trademark backflip for the first time since joining Chelsea 16 months ago. Ahead of the interval, Kirby scored her brace, before providing yet another assist for her team-mate Kerr and the England international got a hand in all goals after squaring the ball to Reiten to place into the back of the net.
Just days before that, Chelsea qualified for the quarter-finals of the Champions League following a 3-1 aggregate victory against Atletico Madrid. The Blues went into the away tie with a 2-0 advantage and Maren Mjelde converted a spot-kick late on in the contest to extend our lead. Atleti pulled one back with in added time but that did not affect the Blues progression to the last-eight.
Chelsea’s last Women’s Super League game was nine days ago against West Ham and we picked up all three points with a 2-0 win in east London. Kerr and Bethany England both headed home their efforts.
Everton sit fifth in the league standings having lost five, drawn four and won seven. The Toffees were in action last Thursday when they played Birmingham City at St George’s Park and the game finished in a 4-0 win for Wllie Kirk’s Everton. Jill Scott scored first in the closing stages of the first half from 10 yards out and Alishia Lehmann, who is on loan from West Ham, headed home her first Everton goal on the stroke of half-time. After the break, Claire Emslie added the third with a chipped effort and Simone Magill scored a half-volley from range to make it four.
Chelsea Women vs Everton recent head-to-head record
This will be the third time the two sides have met this term having come up against the Toffees at Goodison Park at the end of September for the 2019/20 FA Cup quarter-final – a game that was originally scheduled for March before the Covid-19 brought a premature conclusion to the women’s domestic season. We hosted them in the league in November.
The FA Cup tie ended in a narrow 2-1 defeat as Everton responded from an early Erin Cuthbert goal to progress to the semi-finals of the competition. The Scot got the first goal within five minutes as she beat Sandy MacIver from close range. However, Lucy Graham levelled the scoring with a diving header and Valerie Gauvin gave them the lead.
The home league match at Kingsmeadow finished in a 4-0 triumph for the Blues and the result went down in club history as we set new unbeaten record of 26 WSL games. It was a comfortable afternoon at our KT1 home as Ji So-Yun struck a volley within the first quarter of an hour and our domination finally paid off when England fired a quick-fire brace late on in the game. Pernille Harder provided the finishing touches with a sensational effort in added time.
We didn’t play each other last season as our away match in December was postponed due a frozen pitch and our home fixture was not fulfilled due to the pandemic.
Next up for the Blues
On Wednesday 24 March, Hayes’ squad continue with our Champions League campaign when we fly to Budapest in Hungary to play Wolfsburg.
Due to Government restrictions on travellers entering the UK due to the Covid-19 pandemic, we have agreed with UEFA and Wolfsburg that both legs of our quarter-final will be staged at the same venue, Szusza Ference Stadium, in Hungary’s capital. The match kicks off at 4pm UK time (5pm CET).
