As Portugal prepare to take on neighbours Spain in a mouthwatering last-16 tie at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, we take a look at the players from the Atlantic side of Iberia who made an impact at Chelsea over the years.
Of the 15 Portuguese players who have pulled on the Blues shirt, nine of them have also found the net in our colours, contributing a solid 64 goals – and counting – between them in all competitions.
One of those is a current member of both the Chelsea and Portugal squads, with Pedro Neto having featured in all four of their matches so far at this summer’s World Cup.
He will be hoping to make an impact again when they face Spain in Dallas at 8pm UK time on Monday, with a potential quarter-final against the USA or Belgium up for grabs for the winner.
Ahead of that match, we run through Neto and the rest of the nine Portuguese players to have scored for Chelsea…
Pedro Neto – 19
Our winger has found the net 19 times in his first 103 matches since joining Chelsea from Wolverhampton Wanderers in the summer of 2024. That figure includes one hat-trick, in the 4-0 win over Hull City in last season’s FA Cup fourth round, and three goals on his last trip to the USA, when he scored against LAFC, Flamengo and Benfica as we triumphed at the FIFA Club World Cup.
Ricardo Carvalho – 11
A classy centre-back who formed one half of our legendary defensive partnership alongside John Terry, Carvalho also contributed 11 goals in his 210 appearances. A modest return, but it featured some memorable ones, particularly finishing the team move to complete the 3-0 win over Manchester United which sealed the second of our back-to-back Premier League titles in 2006.
Joao Felix – 11
Another player on this list currently at the World Cup with Portugal, Joao Felix managed his double figures for goals across two spells with Chelsea. The first four came during a loan spell from Atletico Madrid in the second half of 2022/23, then he added another seven when he returned for the first half of 2024/25.
Deco – 6
Deco made a good start to his Chelsea career when he was signed to add creativity to Luiz Felipe Scolari’s team in 2008, netting from 30 yards on his debut against Portsmouth and making it two from two with a free-kick against Wigan Athletic in his next match. Unsurprisingly he couldn’t maintain that goalscoring form, as those two strikes represented a third of his total in his two years at Stamford Bridge.
Raul Meireles – 6
The midfielder’s only season at Chelsea brought winner’s medals in both the FA Cup and UEFA Champions League in 2011/12. It was the latter competition which provided his most memorable moment with the Blues, when the former Sporting Lisbon man silenced the taunts of the Benfica fans with a stunning strike in our quarter-final victory.
Tiago Mendes – 4
Another midfielder whose Chelsea career was short but fruitful, Tiago joined the Blues from Benfica to play a part in our first-ever Premier League title triumph in 2004/05. Among his four goals in that campaign was a fine long-range strike as we celebrated our victory with a 3-1 win over Man Utd.
Jose Bosingwa – 3
Right-back Bosingwa was in and out of the starting line-up during his four seasons with Chelsea, which ended with victory in the 2012 Champions League final. That perhaps helps explain why after scoring two goals in his first few months with the Blues, he then had to wait three years to get his third and final for the club.
Paulo Ferreira – 2
For all his vital contributions to our success during his long and distinguished career, not many of them were goals, as Ferreira averaged fewer than one per 100 appearances for Chelsea. They both came in knockout football, helping us beat Colchester United 3-1 in the 2005/06 FA Cup and Bolton Wanderers 4-0 in the 2009/10 League Cup.
Renato Veiga – 2
The third member of Portugal’s 2026 World Cup squad to have scored for Chelsea, both Veiga’s goals came during our triumphant Conference League campaign, in wins over Gent and Astana - although he had departed on loan to Juventus by the time we lifted the trophy.
