A reunion with our Club World Cup final opponent, Paris Saint-Germain, or a meeting with Premier League rivals Newcastle United awaits Chelsea in the Champions League Round of 16.
The Blues’ place in Friday’s draw was secured last month, as our impressive 3-2 victory away at Napoli secured a top-eight finish in the league phase of the competition.
Our potential Round of 16 opponents would come from two knockout phase play-off ties: PSG versus Monaco and Newcastle against Qarabag.
Paris Saint-Germain sealed their spot in the Round of 16 this evening, recording a 2-2 draw with Monaco in the second leg of their play-off tie, but progressing 5-4 on aggregate.
Newcastle’s place, meanwhile, was guaranteed last night as they eliminated Qarabag with an aggregate score of 9-3.
The Blues will be pitted against one of those two familiar foes in Friday’s draw, which takes place at 11am (UK time) in Nyon, Switzerland.
Round of 16 ties will be played across the dates of 10/11 March and 17/18 March.
