The Spanish left-back has completed a move from last season's UEFA Conference League finalists Rayo Vallecano to join Chelsea and become the latest addition to Xabi Alonso's Blues squad.

• Known commonly as Pep Chavarria, the new Chelsea player’s full name is actually Josep Maria Chavarria Perez.

• The defender is from the Catalan region of Spain. He was born in Figueres, a town of 50,000 people, which was also the birthplace of famous surrealist artist Salvador Dali.

• After leaving his hometown club, Chavarria remained in the Girona area of Catalonia by signing for Olot, a small town famous for having four volcanoes in its centre. The club has a strict policy of only signing Catalan players and its Estadi Municipal d’Olot ground holds just 3,000 supporters.

• Chavarria holds the rare distinction of having played in all four tiers of the Spanish national football pyramid, starting his career in the Tercera Division (Figueres) and then progressing through the Segunda Division B (Olot) and Segunda Division (Real Zaragoza) to reach the Primera Division (Rayo Vallecano).

• The left-back was signed at Rayo Vallecano by a familiar face in English football – Andoni Iraola, who guided Bournemouth to their best-ever Premier League finish last season before moving to Liverpool ahead of the coming campaign.
