Chelsea got straight back to work at Cobham after our UEFA Conference League semi-final, as the big games keep coming thick and fast.
On Thursday evening, the Blues secured a spot in the Conference League final – and an opportunity to claim the club’s first silverware since the FIFA Club World Cup in 2022 – by finishing the job in a professional manner against Djurgarden.
Having already defeated the Swedish side 4-1 in Stockholm last week, we completed the victory in the semi-final second leg at Stamford Bridge, as Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall’s goal gave us a 1-0 win on home soil.
However, there was no time to reflect on an upcoming European final against Real Betis in Poland at the end of May, as the busy end to our domestic season means a quick turnaround and shift of focus to the Premier League for the weeks between now and that match in Wroclaw.
That begins with another huge game on Sunday, when we travel north to take on Newcastle United, meaning Enzo Maresca and his squad were straight back to work at Cobham.
While those who were heavily involved against Djurgarden on Thursday were recovering and getting ready to go again three days later, the rest of the squad were hard at it out on the training pitch, as preparations got under way for the trip to St James’ Park.
‘The first result against Djurgarden gave us the chance to rotate and protect players for the second leg, but we still have today and Saturday to prepare the game,’ said Maresca on Friday.
‘It’s a 12pm kick-off and we played on Thursday night, so it’s not the ideal situation, but we need to play and we need to adapt immediately, prepare for the game in the best way, and hopefully continue our good moment.
'We have two days and the players need to be focused on the Newcastle game because it’s the next one. For us, we have to think like it’s the last game of the season, give everything, and then we see at the end.’
Kick-off against Newcastle is at midday on Sunday 11 May and supporters in the UK can watch the game live on TNT Sports.
We will also be providing updates on all the build-up, action and reaction throughout matchday in our Newcastle United vs Chelsea Match Centre, including live audio commentary, followed by highlights at 4pm.
