The finishing touches were applied to Chelsea's preparations for the FIFA Club World Cup final on Saturday in the last training session before the big kick-off.
The team are ready, the preparations are complete, the only thing that remains now is the final itself, with kick-off against Paris Saint-Germain at 3pm local time (8pm UK time) at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on Sunday.
Enzo Maresca said beforehand he wouldn't be changing the way he has approached matches at this tournament due to the magnitude of the occasion or the high quality of opposition, and he has stuck true to his word.
Following a relaxed start to the session to get the players warmed up, the serious tactical work began, although for obvious reasons we won't be revealing too much of the latter. As always, there was plenty of intensity to the last session out on the pitch before the final, as our head coach made sure his charges were set and ready to go against tomorrow's French opponents.
‘We are trying to help the team prepare for the match in the best way possible, by giving all the information possible to the players so they can perform on the pitch,' said Maresca.
‘I respect every team, but the way I prepare for the match on Sunday is the same way I prepared for the match against the Brazilian teams.
‘It doesn't change much for me in the sense that I try to see where we can hurt them and I try to see where I can prevent them from hurting us. From there we prepare for the match.’
That was echoed by Levi Colwill, who felt that after an impressive Club World Cup campaign to make it all the way to the final, the players are confident those same methods can see them lift the trophy after another 90 minutes at the MetLife Stadium.
‘We’ve got this far playing our football, so why would we change that now?' he pointed out. 'We believe in ourselves, I believe in us and I think we can beat anyone so we’re going to take that confidence going into the game.
‘To know that we’ve made it this far, it’s been a really good achievement, but it’s not over yet. We’ve not come here just to make the final, we’ve come here to win. That’s what we’re all looking forward to trying to do, to preparing really well for.’
With Saturday's session concluded, now it is just up to what happens on the pitch in what is sure to be an exciting conclusion to our Club World Cup campaign in the USA.
