A new week brings new opportunities. For Chelsea, that means the chance to reach the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup.
Standing in our way are Blackburn Rovers of the Championship. They currently lie in 12th position and have won three of their last four in the league. They have beaten fellow EFL clubs Cardiff, Harrogate Town and Walsall to make it to this stage of the Carabao Cup.
Mauricio Pochettino oversaw a training session at Cobham this morning with those who didn’t start against Brentford involved. Those who did were inside in the gym doing recovery.
'We have played Liverpool and Arsenal this season and the team did really well,' Pochettino said in the wake of the Brentford loss.
'When you see this type of game, or Nottingham Forest, we dominate but can't score goals when the block is so, so deep. There are many bodies inside the box and we struggle to score. But in different games, when we have played Arsenal or Liverpool, the team did really well. That is why we are not worried.
'We need to win on Wednesday [against Blackburn Rovers] and then prepare for the game against Tottenham.'
Reece James brought up his 150th Chelsea appearance on Saturday. Pochettino confirmed ahead of that game the skipper wasn’t yet ready to start for the Blues following a lengthy lay-off.
James was in full training today and will hope Wednesday is the night he makes his return to the Chelsea starting XI.
Another player looking to build on minutes gained on Saturday is Deivid Washington. The 18-year-old Brazilian made his Blues debut as a late sub against Brentford, and wasn’t far away from sliding in an equaliser at 1-0 when James’ cross eventually reached him inside the box.
Because of our lengthy injury list, Pochettino named two goalkeepers on the bench on Saturday. Neither was Marcus Bettinelli.
The 31-year-old sustained a pre-season injury and Pochettino provided an update on him after Saturday’s game.
‘Marcus is training with the group,’ said Pochettino.
‘We are looking after him. Some days he can train with the team, sometimes not, and at the moment he’s not quite match fit.’
Wednesday’s fixture may afford Pochettino the opportunity to hand Benoit Badiashile his first minutes of the season.
The defender has been an unused sub in each of our past two fixtures having last played for the Blues in May. Here he is with Lesley Ugochukwu, who hasn’t missed a minute of our Carabao Cup campaign to date.
Both Frenchmen will be looking to make their mark in two days' time.
