Chelsea's players were straight back to work at Cobham today as preparations began for our Premier League clash with Nottingham Forest at Stamford Bridge.
A deserved 4-2 victory over Gent in the Conference League extended our winning run across all competitions to five matches. Enzo Maresca and his staff will want that to become six prior to the October international break.
There will be difficult selection decisions for Maresca to make on Sunday when Forest arrive in west London. Each player in his squad has produced when called upon this season and only Reece James is expected to miss the game through injury.
'Everyone is available [for Forest],' Maresca explained at his pre-match press conference. 'The only one who isn’t is Reece James, who is still out. The rest are available.’
Maresca made ten changes against Gent on Thursday but the fluidity of Chelsea's performance wasn't affected, something which is a credit to the work being undertaken at Cobham.
Those who played significant minutes against the Belgian club were undertaking recovery work this afternoon at our Surrey base.
And those who didn't feature, such as Wes Fofana, Romeo Lavia, Cole Palmer, Jadon Sancho and Nicolas Jackson, were all back out on the grass as the focus shifted to Forest.
Nuno Espírito Santo's side have made an encouraging start to the campaign, with only one defeat suffered in their opening six top-flight matches, and Maresca is aware of the threat the visitors will pose.
Yet the Chelsea head coach has highlighted the growing confidence and energy within his squad, which he says are natural byproducts of successive victories.
‘The results are helping us but I think they are especially convinced because they can see the identity and the purpose we have every game. I think that’s the most important thing.’
‘When you win games, it provides energy, trust, confidence,’ said Maresca. ‘So, for sure, it’s helping the process but the players are the first to recognise when the team plays well or not.
