It was back to work at Cobham this morning for Mauricio Pochettino and his Chelsea players as preparation for Friday night's clash with Luton Town got under way.
Our opening two fixtures of the Premier League campaign – home to Liverpool, away at West Ham United – have yielded a single point and much frustration. The performances deserved more.
Luton's visit to Stamford Bridge on Friday evening provides another opportunity for the Blues to claim the first victory of the Pochettino era. The focus this week is firmly on three points.
The first-team squad regrouped at Cobham this morning and undertook a session in the warm sun, something of a rarity in the UK this summer.
Raheem Sterling was involved – and he spoke after the match at West Ham about why he has hit the ground running this season.
‘I was raring to go from the off-season, looking to get back to the levels I know I can get to, it is as simple as that,' the England international explained.
‘I’m a player that needs to be driving, action after action. If I’m not doing that I’m nowhere near my best, so that’s what I need to keep doing every time I get the ball. I have to turn, drive and be aggressive. That’s what I plan on doing.'
Moises Caicedo continues to adapt to life at Chelsea following his transfer from Brighton & Hove Albion.
The 21-year-old joined the club last week and made his debut off the bench against West Ham. There will be more to come from the midfielder in the weeks ahead.
It is a similar story with Mykhailo Mudryk. The winger featured as a second-half substitute against Liverpool and West Ham but has the full faith of Pochettino.
'He’s a young player and a player that has a lot of talent,’ the Chelsea head coach explained.
‘I think he needs to build his continuity and trust [with his team-mates], work hard in the training sessions during the week and continue to show he is ready to perform.
‘We need to also build that trust with him and he needs to build it with us as part of the team, as is the same with many of our younger players.
'It will take a little time but there is no doubting he has enormous talent and quality and it’s only a matter of time before he settles into the team on a regular basis.
‘For sure, there is no doubt in my mind that he will find a way to perform in the way that we expect at Chelsea because he is a tremendous young player with lots of talent.’
There was also the welcome sight of Benoit Badiashile and Armando Broja continuing their respective rehabilitations from injury.
Neither player has featured this season. Broja has been absent since December after undergoing surgery on an anterior cruciate ligament injury sustained in our winter friendly against Aston Villa.
Meanwhile, Badiashile, who joined the Blues in January from Monaco, has been sidelined since May with a hamstring injury.
