Having been afforded a day off following our Premier League victory over Newcastle United, the Chelsea players returned to Cobham today to undertake recovery work and begin preparations for our FA Cup quarter final.
Leicester City visit Stamford Bridge on Sunday afternoon with a place in the last four, and another trip to Wembley, up for grabs. However, the Foxes currently sit atop the Championship and will not prove easy opposition.
Chelsea head coach Mauricio Pochettino has several days to ready his players for the fixture – and the priority during today's session at Cobham was to refresh the minds and bodies of those who featured against Newcastle on Monday evening.
The Blues claimed a deserved 3-2 victory over Eddie Howe's side at Stamford Bridge, with Nicolas Jackson, Cole Palmer, and Mykhailo Mudryk all on the scoresheet.
Palmer's goal was his 13th of an impressive debut campaign at Stamford Bridge. He also claimed an assist as it was his early shot that Jackson intelligently flicked into the corner of the Newcastle net.
Notably, it was the fifth occasion in the Premier League this season that Palmer scored and assisted in the same match. That is a feat no other top-flight player has managed this term.
'[For the assist] my right foot shot was a bit slow and thankfully Nico flicked it in,' said Palmer on his performance. 'On my goal, I saw the defender's legs opening so my focus was really on striking the ball clean. Thankfully, it went in.
'It's going really good [at Chelsea]. That is down to everything here. The staff, all the players, and the manager especially. There are still lots of matches to go this season and we've just got to take game by game and see where we can go.'
The victory over the Magpies marked the return of Marc Cucurella from injury. The Spaniard hadn't featured since early December due to injury but was thrust back into the side in the absence of Ben Chilwell.
Cucurella completed 90 minutes and was pleased to mark his comeback with a win. ‘It’s not easy when you’re a player and you are out injured – it’s difficult,’ he explained.
‘I tried to work hard and put everything into my work. I had the opportunity to play and I’m really happy that I could help the team and stay on the pitch. Hopefully, it’s the first game of many.
‘I think the team played really well. We dominated the game, but we conceded two easy goals and I think we need to improve on this. We deserved the win and I’m very happy for the team.’
Those who didn't start Monday night's game were outside on the grass at Cobham this morning.
That group included the likes of Thiago Silva, Alfie Gilchrist, Noni Madueke and Mudryk, whose excellently-taken goal against Newcastle was his sixth of the campaign across all competitions.
