Less than 24 hours after the final whistle blew on our exciting victory over Newcastle United, the players were back to work at Cobham, with the focus on recovery in the gym for those who had started at Stamford Bridge a day earlier.

Among them were Nicolas Jackson and Cole Palmer, who scored the goals that moved us back up to fifth in the Premier League table.

Palmer’s seventh league goal of the season proved the difference between the sides, although it needed plenty of dogged defending late on to secure the three points. The attacker made sure to praise those behind him on the pitch for their efforts in repelling Newcastle after his goal.

‘The defenders were top, making last-minute clearances, last-ditch tackles and being strong, because we know how physical they are with Joelinton, [Alexander] Isak, [Sandro] Tonali and others,’ he said.

‘We were disappointed to drop the points last time in the league so to win today was important,' Palmer added.

‘There’s loads more improvement to come from us. We’re all very young and we’ve got a top coach, so we’re still improving. We have a long way to go.’

Helping accelerate the players’ recovery from a fast-paced Premier League fixture was time spent in a type of oxygen chamber. Can you work out who this is?!

Out on the grass, Enzo Maresca was turning his attention to Wednesday’s reunion with the Magpies up at St James’ Park.

For this Carabao Cup fourth round fixture, the head coach could continue to make full use of his supremely talented squad, with defenders Benoit Badiashile and Tosin Adarabioyo among those in contention to return to the starting XI.

Marc Cucurella and Enzo Fernandez are in the same boat. They both came off the bench yesterday to help us over the line, and on a drizzly morning in Surrey got to work to stake their claim for selection from the off.

Kick-off in the North-East is at 7.45pm.

Oh, and that player wearing an oxygen mask? It’s Malo Gusto!
