Wesley Fofana believes our UEFA Champions League victory over Pafos showed how this Chelsea team are taking onboard new head coach Liam Rosenior’s ideas at Cobham, while the defender also praised matchwinner Moises Caicedo.

The Blues overcame stubborn opposition at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday evening, to triumph 1-0 over competition debutants Pafos and take another step closer to the knockout stages of this season’s Champions League.

An important three points put us eighth in the league phase table after seven games, now guaranteed of at least a spot in the play-offs, and well placed to secure direct qualification straight to the last 16, even if we were forced to work hard for our latest victory.

‘Pafos played very well,’ said Fofana. ‘They played a low block which is never easy and it was very hard, but we kept going to push. We played well, we continued to attack.

‘It was good to score on a set-piece, because we worked hard on that during the week at the training ground.

‘We are very happy as we got the three points, a clean sheet, so it was a good night.’

It wasn’t just the work on set-pieces that Fofana believed we saw paying off at the Bridge on Wednesday.

This was Rosenior’s debut in the Champions League and fourth game as Chelsea head coach overall, bringing three wins so far. It is still early days as he imprints his ideas on the Blues, but according to the French defender, there were promising signs of things taking shape against Pafos.

‘We work a lot, we understand more what he wants, but for sure we don’t have a lot of time, because we play every few days. But we are very focused, everyone is together and we continue to work.

‘We work every day on tactical things. On Wednesday we played very well. We were very aggressive without the ball and with the ball we played very quick. It’s very good, everyone is working very hard for success.’

However, it required the intervention of Caicedo to seal the win, when he met Benoit Badiashile’s flick-on from a Malo Gusto corner to head in the decisive goal.

‘Everyone knows Moises is an incredible midfielder,’ added Fofana. ‘He helps the team without the ball a lot, but with the ball as well.

‘Against Pafos we see he scored a good header. He’s not the tallest in the team, but he scored, and we are very happy! Moises is incredible.’

That winning goal leaves us knowing another victory in our final league phase fixture away at Napoli next week would guarantee us a top-eight finish and qualification directly to the last 16, without the need to compete for a spot via the two-legged play-offs.

‘It was very important, we stay close,’ Wesley concluded. ‘We won at home, it was a great night, we are happy. We scored a bit late, but the most important thing is the three points now.

‘We are in a good place, but we have one more game we need to win. We hope we stay in the top eight.’
