The Chelsea Foundation’s Schools Education and Health and Wellbeing departments brought together two generations from the local area at Stamford Bridge to mark this year’s Remembrance Day.
Young students from the Student Voice Group at Fulham Primary School joined our Activate Seniors for afternoon tea on Thursday to learn and share experiences.
The occasion was made even more special for our seniors who had the opportunity to meet in person for the first time in 19 months, replacing their regular virtual catch ups which had become the norm during the pandemic. The group were delighted to be given the opportunity to talk to the pupils and share their memories of growing during World War Two, as well as sharing some memorabilia from their past.
The students brought along letters they had written to the senior supporters which included questions on how they adapted to life during the war, how they managed to cope with rationing, and what their abiding memories were of the time.
David Hadley, Activate Seniors participant commented on the event: ‘It was so nice to meet the group of children from Fulham Primary, they all seemed very interested to hear what we had to say about the war.
‘I’m pleased I could contribute with some of my old coins and programmes, as well as telling the children different stories from my experience of war times - one tends to forget its now 76 years since the end of the war.
‘A lovely event all round and really happy to have been involved.’
Ellie Lock, health & wellbeing project officer, added: ‘We were so happy to be able to bring our seniors back together after so many months apart.
‘Thankfully, virtual sessions have been possible but meeting face to face once again was a really wonderful moment. They loved spending time with the children, with some great conversation and sharing of many memories.
‘We are extremely happy to bring these generations together and give both children and seniors the opportunity to create friendships and share memories.’
