We now know that Chelsea will begin our 2025/26 Women's Super League season with a clash against Manchester City at Stamford Bridge. We are hoping it will stick in the memory as much as these excellent previous first-day wins…

Next season's Women's Super League fixtures were announced in full this morning, with the match against Man City first on the agenda, before an away trip to Villa Park, where we will face Aston Villa in the second game of the campaign.

There's still some time to go before the first match of the season kicks off, but in the meantime, you can enjoy a look back at four of our other memorable season openers.

Chelsea 6-0 Bristol City, 2017/18

Chelsea started as we meant to go on back in 2017, with an opening day thumping of Bristol City at Kingsmeadow.

Emma Hayes started new signings Magdalena Eriksson and Maria Thorisdottir in the back three, and when Karen Carney found an unmarked Drew Spence in the box, the midfielder opened our account for the season with a powerful header.

That 6-0 win set the tone for a campaign where we won the league by six points over second-placed Manchester City.

Chelsea 1-0 Tottenham 2019/20

Stamford Bridge was the venue for the curtain raiser in 2019, and newly-promoted Tottenham Hotspur were our opponents this time around.

The difference between the two sides was a sensational 25-yard strike from Bethany England, the striker turning on the style in front of a 24,000-strong crowd.

Once again, the Blues got off to a winning start on the way to lifting the title at the end of that season, although this time by just one point over Man City.

Chelsea 2-1 Tottenham 2023/24

Four years later, we hosted Tottenham at the Bridge once more. Debutant Mia Fishel netted on her debut, a goal that she described as a 'dream come true', heading in from a Niamh Charles cross.

Lauren James poked her shot home from close range to double our lead, and though Spurs pulled one back, we took all three points on the way to a fifth consecutive WSL title that year.

Chelsea 1-0 Aston Villa 2024/25

Our opener in 2024 marked a new era, with the arrival of Sonia Bompastor in the dugout. Johanna Rytting Kaneryd's goal delivered the three points that day, and the result put a marker down for the rest of the season.

Bompastor oversaw a historic unbeaten season in the WSL and delivered a domestic Treble, winning the Women's FA Cup and League Cup alongside the league title.

While that result was won by a narrow margin, the first away match of the season saw us beat Crystal Palace 7-0, as Chelsea went on to win 19 of 22 league matches in 2024/25.
