Chelsea Football Club is pleased to announce that Cobham Next Gen goalkeeper Freddy Bernal has signed a new contract, keeping him at the club until at least June 2029.
Having joined Chelsea’s Academy as an Under-8, Bernal became a full-time scholar in 2025/26 and established himself for the Under-18s, winning the Under-18s Premier League title at Stamford Bridge.
Bernal has since become a consistent presence between the sticks for Cobham Next Gen, making eight appearances so far and keeping a clean sheet in our latest EFL Trophy clash against Reading.
The 18-year-old also gained valuable European experience last season in the UEFA Youth League, producing some standout performances against Bayern Munich, Benfica and Ajax.
A reliable presence in goal, Bernal has demonstrated maturity throughout his progression at Chelsea.
His form has also been recognised internationally with regular invitations to England youth camps. Having previously represented the Young Lions at Under-17 and Under-18 level, he featured for the Under-19s during the September and October international window.
Congratulations, Freddy!
