On Levi Colwill's 23rd birthday, we reflect on several major milestones in the defender's career so far, including his progress through the Chelsea Academy to become a world champion and England international.

Unfortunately, Colwill has been absent for the Blues during the current campaign due to a knee injury sustained in pre-season.

Yet the centre-back has contributed heavily to our successes over the past 12 months and, given he only turns 23 today, still has a long Chelsea career ahead of him.

He has already achieved plenty with the Blues, though, since first arriving at Cobham at Under-9s level. And here we look back at several of the defender's important milestones and moments as a Chelsea player.

Turning pro | 26 February 2020

Having graduated from schoolboy football to our older Academy teams, Colwill made his mark and, on his 17th birthday, signed his first professional contract with Chelsea.

He featured regularly for the Under-18s during the 2019/20 campaign and made debuts in the UEFA Youth League and FA Youth Cup, as well as his first appearance for our Under-21s. He became a regular for the latter in the following season.

Leaving on loan | 1 August 2021

Having signed a new contract with Chelsea in the summer of 2021, Colwill got his first taste of senior football on loan in the Championship with Huddersfield Town.

His first-team debut came in a League Cup penalty shootout win over Sheffield Wednesday, and he soon established himself as a key member of the Terriers side that went agonisingly close to claiming promotion to the top flight, losing the play-off final to Nottingham Forest.

The Premier League | 7 August 2022

After an impressive campaign in the Championship, a Premier League debut soon followed for Colwill, during another loan with Brighton & Hove Albion.

He came off the bench late on for a side managed by Graham Potter and including Robert Sanchez and Moises Caicedo to help Brighton see out a 2-1 win over Manchester United. It was the first of 23 appearances for the Seagulls as they finished sixth in the top flight.

Chelsea debut | 13 August 2023

Having returned from loan, Colwill impressed Chelsea head coach Mauricio Pochettino during pre-season and the Argentine wasted no time handing the young defender his senior Chelsea debut.

It came from the start as Colwill played the full 90 minutes of our opening Premier League fixture of the 2023/24 campaign, a 1-1 home draw with Liverpool, on the left side of a back three alongside Thiago Silva and Axel Disasi.

England bow | 13 October 2023

Colwill’s performances in the Chelsea defence didn't go unnoticed outside Stamford Bridge. He had already helped England win the UEFA European Under-21 Championship in 2023 and, exactly two months after his Blues debut, he made his first senior international appearance.

Playing alongside fellow Chelsea Academy graduates Fikayo Tomori and Conor Gallagher, he featured for the full 90 minutes at left-back in a 1-0 friendly win for England over Australia at Wembley.

Off the mark | 3 December 2023

On his 16th Chelsea appearance, Colwill netted his first Premier League goal, and his first for the Blues in any competition.

As fate would have it, it came against the side with which he had made his first steps in the top flight. Levi turned in after Nicolas Jackson had headed Conor Gallagher’s corner back into danger, putting us two goals ahead in an eventual 3-2 home win over Brighton.

Captain Colwill | 6 December 2023

In Chelsea’s next fixture, which came three days after Colwill had scored his first goal for the club, the defender skippered the Blues for the first time.

With captain Reece James on the bench and vice-captain Gallagher suspended following a red card in the win over Brighton, Colwill was handed the armband by Pochettino for a tough trip to Old Trafford. We ultimately suffered a 2-1 defeat to Manchester United, but it was a sign of Colwill’s leadership qualities and growing importance.

A key strike | 25 May 2025

The most important of Colwill’s three goals for Chelsea so far came on the final day of the 2024/25 Premier League season.

Our trip to Nottingham Forest was almost a UEFA Champions League play-off, with both teams vying in a close qualification race which went all the way to the wire.

It was settled shortly after half-time, when Levi converted Pedro Neto’s pass from close range to give us a 1-0 victory. The Blues were back in the top four and back in the Champions League!

World champion | 13 July 2025

Colwill had already earned the first winner’s medal of his senior career by coming off the bench to help the Blues win our UEFA Conference League final win over Real Betis, but it was a couple of months later across the Atlantic that the big one arrived.

The defender made five appearances during our FIFA Club World Cup campaign, all of them ending in victory, and was in imperious form as we kept a clean sheet to defeat Paris Saint-Germain in the final. Levi Colwill – one of our own and champion of the world.

Happy birthday Levi! We can’t wait to see what comes next.
