Sonia Bompastor was left feeling frustrated by our 1-1 draw with Everton at Stamford Bridge on Saturday afternoon, but felt it was an opportunity to reflect and improve before Tuesday night's Women's Champions League trip to Hacken in Sweden.
The head coach said in her pre-match press conference the Toffees would be hard to break down, and that proved to be true until Sandy Baltimore broke the deadlock after 28 minutes.
Yet an unfortunate own goal from Lucy Bronze levelled things up almost immediately afterwards, and Chelsea were once again forced to battle through their block.
While Chelsea's unbeaten run in the WSL was extended to 17 games, and we remain undefeated in all competitions this season, Bompastor took the opportunity to reflect on the draw after the game and pointed to the areas where she felt her side were below par this afternoon.
'The result is really frustrating for us,' she said. 'Today the performance was not good enough for us to get a better result. We were probably too slow. We had 20 shots on goal, eight on target, but even when we shot on target we were not clinical enough, not ruthless enough, and I don’t think we made Everton's goalkeeper work hard enough.
'Also, the connection between the players didn’t really click today. So it happens. When we have a performance like that, it’s good for us to provide feedback and to be honest and realistic about what happened on the pitch.
'In terms of the defensive aspects, today we were not compact enough as a block. We didn’t recover enough balls in terms of the high press. So that’s something we need to do better going into the next game.
'Without the ball, we conceded an unfortunate goal, but it was the goal that allowed them to get a point from this game. So it happens sometimes. As much as we are frustrated, now it’s for us to analyse the game, take the feedback, and move on to the next one.'
Despite the initial disappointment of dropping points, the head coach did point to some positives to take from the game. Chelsea kept Everton to zero shots on target throughout the 90 minutes, even if we struggled to break through their low block. And with a match against Hacken to play on Tuesday night, there's no time to dwell on today's result.
'If we analyse from the beginning of the season, we had many games where we had a lot of good performances and a lot of quality on the pitch,' she continued. 'So it’s good for us when we are doing well not to go too high and when we have a frustrating result, not to go too low. Because I believe this team has a lot of quality, and we can do better than what we did today.
'Sometimes it's good not to always perform at a good level because it means you still have work to be done, and you need that. For me, it’s best when you have a frustrating result to play quickly straight afterwards. So the quick turnaround is actually a positive thing. You can quickly move on and focus on what is next.'
