Conor Gallagher couldn’t hide his delight when reflecting on our dramatic win over Manchester United, praising the character of the Chelsea players as well as labelling the victory as a ‘bonkers game’.

The Blues edged out Erik ten Hag’s side 4-3 at Stamford Bridge, in a game that swung back and forth and ended in the most dramatic of fashions courtesy of Cole Palmer’s late goals.

Chelsea raced into a 2-0 lead thanks to an early strike from Gallagher and a penalty from Palmer, before United turned the game on its head by hitting back through an Alejandro Garnacho brace either side of a Bruno Fernandes goal.

However, Palmer wasn’t finished yet and scored his second spot-kick of the night deep into injury time to level the scoring before then sending Stamford Bridge wild with a winner as the clocked ticked past the 100-minute mark with the final kick of the game, completing his hat-trick in the process.

After all that drama, skipper Gallagher was asked to reflect on what he had just been a part of when speaking post-match.

‘Wow,’ Conor said, exhaling loudly and smiling from ear to ear. ‘I mean it was a pretty bonkers game!

‘It’s great to get the three points in the end and the lads showed a lot of character to keep playing and keep trying to get the goals in the end.

‘Credit to the boys and to Cole as well. He’s been unbelievable for us. He’s got so much confidence, he’s so cool and calm. He’s been fantastic from the first day he showed up and I can’t speak highly enough of him.’

Gallagher put in a typically energetic display in the centre of the park alongside Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez, before he was withdrawn in the second half as we searched for a way back into the game.

Such is the professionalism of the England international, he didn’t sulk when coming on but rather praised Mauricio Pochettino for being bold by removing him for, on paper, a more attacking option in Noni Madueke – the man who won us the penalty for Palmer’s second goal.

‘It was a crazy game but I always thought we had a chance [to get back into it],’ added our No.23.

‘We were getting chances and I thought it was a good substitution from the gaffer to bring on Noni for me. He is brilliant in one-vs-one situations and Noni showed that by winning the penalty. So, credit to the gaffer and the other lads who came off the bench. It was brilliant from the boys.

‘Now we need to build on this because there’s still plenty to play for this season. Of course, we want to win the FA Cup and we have a massive game against Man City coming up.

‘There are European spots in the Premier League to fight for and we’re going to do our best to do so.’
