Conor Gallagher talks about family life and his path to the Chelsea first team in Sunday’s matchday programme, which also includes an interview with Frank Leboeuf on what it’s like to win the World Cup.

It’s been quite the introduction to the Blues squad for our young Academy graduate, who scored his first goal for his boyhood club with a sensational strike against Crystal Palace that is up for the Premier League’s October Goal of the Month award.

In our exclusive interview with Conor, he talks about the impact his three older brothers – each of whom has trodden his own path in the game – have had on his journey from training with Chelsea as a six-year-old to making it into the first team.

Along the way he’s had a number of loan spells that have helped shape him into the player you see today.

‘The loans were all very different and it meant I could show different sides of my game in a way,’ he explains. ‘At West Brom, we got relegated in the end but every game was a fight and I had to be physically battling every time we went on the pitch. It helped me build character and develop as a footballer and a person as well.

‘I’m very grateful, and very lucky to have played under the managers, and for the clubs that I have. Every club’s been brilliant with me personally as well. All the fans and the managers, and the players, have really helped me along the way.

‘I think, after the West Brom season, I was still at a stage where I’d not really shown enough that I was ready to play a big part at Chelsea, so the loan move to Palace last season was very important for me.

‘To be honest, I didn’t realise how much I was going to love it and how well it was going to go. That’s all thanks to the club, the fans and the manager. They gave me a lot of confidence and they helped me perform the way I did. How I was doing there definitely gave me belief that I was good enough to perform at Chelsea.’

From glorious beginnings to the pinnacle of football, our beloved French centre-back from the 1990s, Frank Leboeuf, talks about his greatest achievement in the game: lifting the World Cup on home soil. And, as he told us, he owes so much of it to Chelsea.

‘I always say that joining Chelsea changed my life,’ he said. ‘It really did. I had never won a major trophy as a player, then joining Chelsea in 1996, everything just changed for me. Silverware became a thing and then, in my home country of France, I lifted the World Cup in 1998 after we beat Brazil in the final. It was a great time.’
