Enzo Maresca never envisioned an easy night's work for his Chelsea side against Lincoln City – and that more than proved the case. Yet the Blues battled to victory at LNER Stadium to secure a place in the Carabao Cup fourth round.
Lincoln, roared on by a raucous, sold-out home crowd, were direct and combative during the opening 45 minutes. And it was an approach that paid off as, just before the interval, Rob Street was able to guide a finish beyond Blues goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen.
A response was needed from Maresca's side after the break, and it was almost instantaneous. Tyrique George pulled Chelsea level with an outstanding half-volley, which flew in off the post from 20 yards.
The Academy graduate then turned provider as he was able to slip a pass through to Facundo Buonanotte in the penalty area, and the Argentine was able to wriggle beyond two challenges before poking the ball into the corner from close range.
Lincoln pushed hard in search of an equaliser, and last-ditch defending was required as an aerial bombardment, particularly from throw-ins, was produced by the hosts. But the Blues came through to secure a place in round four.
