A theme is emerging when Ajax visit Stamford Bridge in the Champions League: goals, and lots of them. Six were struck in last night’s meeting, five by the Blues to record a convincing victory.
Enzo Maresca’s side had started the contest brightly and we were aided in our pursuit of three important league-phase points when Kenneth Taylor was dismissed following a poor challenge on Facundo Buonanotte.
Our opening goal arrived soon after when Marc Guiu nudged home a close-range finish following a Wesley Fofana header. A deflected shot from distance by Moises Caicedo quickly doubled our advantage.
Wout Weghorst reduced the deficit through a penalty, only to then concede one, which was confidently converted by Enzo Fernandez. There was still time in the opening period for Estevao Willian to win and convert another spot kick.
Early into the second half, Tyrique George marked his introduction from the bench with a goal. And from that point, the Blues were able to cruise home to victory.
The win was just reward for a convincing display from the Blues, and we have pulled together our favourite images from an enjoyable, although raid-sodden, evening at the Bridge.
