Alejandro Garnacho discusses the intricacies of modern wing play and the impact of Liam Rosenior in an exclusive interview for today’s matchday programme.

The Argentinian has recently set an obscure record at Chelsea, becoming the first player to score twice in two consecutive substitute appearances – which he achieved with braces against Cardiff City and Arsenal in our last two Carabao Cup outings – and puts it partly down to the way the game opens up midway through the second half.

‘Every game is different – every team’s set-up depends on the results and a lot of other things,’ he explains.

‘Sometimes, as a winger, you start a game and in the first 60 minutes you touch the ball four times, with no space. And then, after 60 minutes, everything is open and the guy who comes from the bench scores two.

‘Football has changed a lot with the years but I think today it depends a lot on the wingers. When you receive the ball and you have time, you have to make the right decision.’

The 21-year-old also tells us he has been impressed by the new head coach’s approach in his first few weeks.

‘He’s a good guy, he understands the players, he speaks a lot with us to understand our situations and explains everything to us,’ Garnacho says.

‘You can see that he was a player, and he understands players, and this is important also. Now, we have won four games in a row, and maybe it’s not the best football that we’ve played, but football is like this – at the end you have to catch the three points.

‘He came with an idea and we are doing really well with him, even though we can’t really train a lot because of all the games, then recovery, which leaves just one day when you have to prepare for the next one. So it’s hard to do it but we are doing well.’
