Alejandro Garnacho has explained the work he has been doing to help the team defensively and discussed the tough task Chelsea face against Atalanta tonight.
The 21-year-old has featured in four of our five UEFA Champions League matches so far this season, since joining the Blues in the summer. Now he and his team-mates are in Italy, getting ready for our next European tie against the Bergamo side.
Head coach Enzo Maresca has already highlighted the off the ball work that he has been doing with Garnacho at Cobham to help him improve that area of his game, and ahead of this match the winger confirmed he is working hard to help the team more out of possession.
‘Today, in modern football, defending is an important part of the game because now every team you face is strong and you have to defend with everyone,’ he said.
‘I know I have to defend if I want to play, the manager told me it was like this. So I just try to do the work he asks. With the ball, he told me to just go with it, and if I lose it recover it.
‘So I have to help the team defensively also, but that is just a part of football now.’
Still, Garnacho will be hoping that Chelsea spend more time on the ball than off it at the Stadio di Bergamo on Tuesday evening, when we face Atalanta at 8pm UK time.
He knows our Serie A opposition will provide a stern challenge, especially on their own turf in northern Italy. However, the Argentinian is hopeful of picking up more important points to help us reach the knockout stages, with the Blues currently sat seventh in the league phase table, just inside the automatic qualification spots for the last 16.
‘Obviously, every game is important. We know when we play away it’s a little bit harder, but in the Champions League every team can beat you.
‘It’s a big opportunity for us to get the three points and I think we’re going to be there in the top. We are focused on the game, like every game, and just to win.
‘We expect a strong team and a difficult match. We play away, they have their fans, so it’s not going to be easy, but we have come here and we will try to do our work to get the three points and take them home.’
