Genesis Antwi and his Under-21s team-mates are ready to begin our Premier League 2 play-off journey, starting with a round of 16 clash against Middlesbrough at Kingsmeadow this Saturday.
It has already been a successful 2025/26 campaign for Chelsea Under-21s, who were recently crowned Premier League 2 league-phase winners after securing 14 victories from 20 matches.
Finishing top of the table means the Blues enter the knockout stages as the number one seed, facing 16th-placed Middlesbrough in the opening round. From here, the competition follows a straight knockout format through to the final, to decide the overall champions.
The squad has used the time since clinching the title to regroup and refocus in training ahead of the weekend fixture. Antwi, who has played a key role throughout the season, is fully prepared for the challenge of knockout football.
‘It feels really good to win the league title,’ the 18-year-old said. ‘It’s been a long time coming for the group, so to finally achieve it is special. I’m proud to have played a big part in it as well. Credit to all the boys, everyone contributed and it was a real team effort.
‘We had a slightly shaky game against Fulham, but after that result it really hit us - we’d won the league. We told ourselves: “We’ve done the job”, and then it was time to celebrate and enjoy the moment.
‘Looking back, I think I performed very well throughout the campaign. I contributed with goals and assists and I’m happy with my consistency. Overall, I had a strong season, but again, credit goes to the whole team because everyone did their part.
‘Now we move on to the play-offs, where we need to refocus. Most of the squad have been together for years, so that would make it even more special to win another trophy with this group.’
Antwi is no stranger to success, having won the Under-18 Premier League South title with Chelsea two seasons ago. Adding the Under-21 Premier League league-phase title further highlights the importance of building a winning mentality at this stage of his development.
‘Winning is always a great feeling,’ he continued. ‘It was a great moment. Everyone came together, celebrated as a group and enjoyed it. The atmosphere was really good.
‘There’s a real togetherness in the squad. Everyone is aligned, especially going into the play-offs. We’re all on the same page and focused on the same goals.’
Chelsea’s Under-21s are one of the youngest squads in Premier League 2, with several Under-18s players stepping up during the campaign, alongside even younger talents featuring at times.
‘I think I’ve embraced the leadership role well,’ Antwi said. ‘With younger players coming in, I try to communicate, support them and push them in training and games. I’m not the loudest on the pitch, but I lead in my own way. I want to help others develop, especially since I’ve been in their position before.
‘It’s very important to have unity within the group. Having that winning mentality and leadership experience will help when stepping into first-team environments. Winning consistently now sets a strong foundation.’
The play-offs mark the final stage of the season, where every match is decisive - from the round of 16 through to the final. As league winners, we will have home advantage at Kingsmeadow throughout, should we progress.
Having come through our Academy system since Under-12s level, Antwi is familiar with the demands of knockout football. His experience includes FA Youth Cup fixtures, as well as this season’s UEFA Youth League campaign.
‘We’re all focused,’ he said. ‘Winning the league has given us confidence and momentum. Training has been intense and we’re fully locked in.
‘I treat it like any other game. Whether it’s a play-off or a regular match, I keep the same mindset and preparation. It’s about doing what I do best, staying consistent, calm and focused, and not letting the occasion get to me.
‘It’s been the same all season – work hard, stay focused and follow the game plan. Nothing changes now.’
Chelsea have not faced Middlesbrough this season. Our opponents finished 16th, recording seven wins, seven losses and six draws, as well as the side entering this stage with confidence after a 2-0 away victory over Aston Villa.
‘It will be a tough game,’ Antwi added. ‘They’ll be aggressive and put pressure on us, so we need to be ready for that challenge. I’ll give my best, do what I do well and contribute to the team.
‘It’s definitely a big advantage playing at Kingsmeadow. It’s our home ground and we’re comfortable there. That familiarity helps. I think I can speak for the boys - we all love playing there. The fans and the atmosphere really boost morale and give us extra motivation.
‘If I could give a message to the supporters, it would be - be ready. We’re going to give everything to get the win.’
