Geovany Quenda says that playing in the Premier League will fulfil a childhood dream and he is excited to get to work with his new team-mates and manager Xabi Alonso after signing for the Blues.
The 19-year-old’s move from Sporting to Chelsea was first confirmed in March 2025, but he had to wait until this summer to complete the switch to west London.
On his first day at Cobham, while exploring his new home with the Blues alongside his family, Quenda took some time to discuss the people who have helped and inspired him along his journey to Chelsea and his excitement at taking the next step in his career.
First of all Geovany, you are here today accompanied by your family, by the people closest to you. What importance did they have in your journey before becoming a Chelsea player?
Yes, they are the people who have always been by my side, always gave me good advice, always tried to help me, give me good conditions. They have always been by my side and, for me, having these people here today is a reason to be proud, because they have always been with me, helped me, and obviously for me it is good to have them here with me.
Was there any advice or lesson you received when you were younger that still accompanies you today?
I always got advice from my parents, who told me to always listen to people. Advice should never be rejected and, for me, I always listen, even if it is from a person I have never seen in my life. If I get advice, I will always receive that advice well.
In the squad, there is another player formed in Sporting's academy, Dario Essugo. Do you have a close relationship with him? Did he talk to you about life at Chelsea or about English football?
Yes, he told me that things in England are not easy, this league is not easy. Obviously, I have a good relationship with him, because we have already been together in the national team as well. At Sporting we did not manage to play together, because he left at the start of the season, but I talked with him after he left.
Is there any other player in the squad you already knew? Maybe Pedro Neto, from the national team camps?
Yes. Neto also talked to me when I arrived here, when I came to do my recovery work. And we were together at the national team camp and he talked to me, gave me good advice.
Are you happy to have other Portuguese players with you here?
Obviously, yes. It is good to have them here because of the language and other things as well.
How has your start to life in England been? Has the adaptation been easy, have you been accompanied by family or friends?
I also have my father here, he is here with me. He has helped me a lot and, obviously, other people. My agents are also helping.
Have you had the chance to get to know London and Stamford Bridge?
Yes, I have had the chance to see some games at Stamford Bridge.
Growing up in Portugal, did you always dream of playing one day in the Premier League?
Obviously, it is the best league. It is the best league and us players always have the dream of reaching the highest level. So obviously I have dreamed of playing in the Premier League.
Do you have memories of watching Chelsea when you were a child? If so, was there any player you admired, who you had as a reference?
Everyone remembers [Eden] Hazard, he was a player who left his mark on Chelsea a lot. That is my main memory of Chelsea.
Who were the players you looked up to when you were at Sporting's academy?
Cristiano Ronaldo, Rafael Leao and Nuno Mendes recently.
Pre-season starts now under Xabi Alonso, you must be excited to work with him?
Yes, it is exciting. Obviously, I have to be ready to help the team and always give my best. I am here to be one more player who can help the club.
