Jamie Gittens has revealed his combination with Pedro Neto for our opening goal at Burnley came straight off the training ground, and explained why he arrives at Cobham with a smile on his face every day.
Gittens played a starring role in our 2-0 victory at Turf Moor in Saturday’s early kick-off, posing a constant threat to the Burnley defence down our left flank and teeing up Neto with an inch-perfect cross to open the scoring, before Enzo Fernandez got the second late on.
We were made to work hard for the three points by our newly promoted opponents, but it paid off with a win which – combined with Manchester City’s defeat at Newcastle United – takes us up to second place in the Premier League standings.
‘To go there and win the game and get three points is not easy,’ said Gittens. ‘We knew going there it's a really tough game against Burnley, but we won it, so I'm happy for the team.
‘It was a hard-fought game. To go to Burnley is tough and to get the three points is really good for us. We feel more comfortable and confident to play in these games, so it’s good.
‘It just shows that we're here to contend, to compete at the highest level. So to go there and get three points is really big for us.’
Gittens’ cross for Neto to open the scoring was his first Premier League assist for the Blues, but his fourth in as many starts across all competitions, and the winger revealed it is something the team is working on at Cobham.
‘That's what we work on in training a lot almost every day, this type of cross that we do,’ explained. ‘It came off this time and I'm happy that it came off in the game.
‘I was just thinking to shift it and look up. I looked up and I saw Enzo [Fernandez] and Pedro at the back post so I thought if I cross it there I have all of them, someone will try to attack the ball and get on the end of it, and Pedro did.’
That assist was further sign that Gittens is finding his feet at Chelsea since completing his summer move to west London from Borussia Dortmund. He insists there is plenty more he can to do to keep improving and help the team achieve success this season, but he is enjoying his work at Chelsea.
‘It feels good, but obviously I want to do more. It'll take time to play with these great players in my team. I'm sure in the future I'll be even better.
‘As a team, we just want to win as many games as possible and hopefully contend for the Premier League title and other trophies.
‘Individually, I just need to keep going, keep learning from the other players and the coaching staff as well.
‘It's been really fun, to be fair. Every day I go in, I’ve got a smile on my face to see the boys.’
And the fun doesn’t stop there, with a mouthwatering pair of fixtures coming up this week, when we host Barcelona in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday evening, before Arsenal come to Stamford Bridge in the Premier League on Sunday.
‘It’s a big week for us,’ Jamie added. ‘Two exciting games, two competitive games. It will be fun to play and hopefully we get three points in both games.’
