General manager Paul Green provided some welcome team news ahead of Chelsea Women’s return to Champions League action against Vllaznia at Kingsmeadow on Wednesday evening.
The Blues are looking to build on our excellent 1-0 victory over Paris Saint-Germain on matchday one, when Millie Bright’s first-half strike did the damage to secure a result which sets the tone for the remainder of the group phase.
Chelsea sit second in Group A and will be looking to extend our unbeaten run in all competitions to six matches with a win over Vllaznia, as the champions of England welcome the champions of Albania to London.
We have two home games in quick succession this week, starting with the visit of Vllaznia. There is a feel-good factor in the squad despite a congested fixture schedule and while Green confirmed two absentees, he is pleased to report a welcome return for one key name.
‘They’re looking good, we’re very used to these kind of turnarounds,' he said. 'We’ve been competing on all fronts and going deep into competitions for many years. This year is no different. Players have come back from the weekend’s game in heavy conditions but they’re all looking good, looking fresh and ready to go at Kingsmeadow tomorrow night.
‘We’re still going to be without Jelena Cankovic. Her injury hasn’t settled down as quickly as we’d hoped so she won’t be available. Melanie (Leupolz) is still on maternity leave but Fran Kirby does come back into the squad. She’s been back in training for the last couple of days so she’ll be one addition to the squad.’
The return of Fran Kirby to the squad is brilliant news for the Blues. The forward netted three goals in as many games before the international break and Green hopes she can pick up from where she left off.
‘Fran’s a quality player and to have her back for tomorrow night is fantastic, it gives everybody a boost. She’s had a great start to this season, she was obviously out with illness but she’s now available. We look forward to seeing her tomorrow night and hopefully staying healthy for the whole season.’
Having never met Vllaznia in European competition, there has been plenty of work going into studying our Albanian opposition ahead of this one. Green discussed what he believes the visitors will bring to the table.
‘We’re expecting a tough game. We think they’ll be very well organised, very well structured defensively. They did very well against Real Madrid last week, two late goals in the second half ultimately got Madrid the win, they were very difficult to break down. We’re expecting them to come to Kingsmeadow with a similar tactical approach to the game.
‘They’ve got a mixture of Albanian internationals and some American players as well. They did very well in their league last year and continue to do that this year. We’re looking forward to a tough game but we know if we perform to our best, we’ll have more than enough to get the result we all want.’
Vllaznia have made history in becoming the first Albanian side to reach this stage of UEFA competition in 33 years. With this in mind, Green believes they will be relishing the chance to take on some of the game's biggest names and the Blues will give them the respect they deserve.
‘They’re in the competition for the first time in the club’s history. It’s a massive achievement for them to play against some of the best teams in Europe in Real Madrid, Chelsea and PSG in the group they‘ve been drawn in. I’m sure they’re enjoying this adventure and they’ll be playing with quite a lot of freedom.
‘There will not be that much expected of them perhaps to get out of that type of group, but we’re giving them full respect. We know we need to build on last week’s great result against PSG. It’s important to get two wins out of two and get six points in the group. We’re all looking forward to it and we hope there will be a big crowd there tomorrow night to cheer us on.’
After three consecutive away fixtures since returning from international duty, we return to home soil at Kingsmeadow on Wednesday night, where Green is hoping to see plenty of fans present that can help the team in their pursuit of three points.
‘It feels a while since we’ve played at Kingsmeadow having three away games back-to-back last week. We’re all excited to get back down there. Our fans are fantastic and hopefully they’ll come out in numbers tomorrow night to see us get the second win in the Champions League.’
A live stream of the match will be available on our platforms.
