Ahead of today’s Barclays FA Women’s Super League clash with Everton, Guro Reiten discusses the importance of the match, what Chelsea Women need to improve on and the competition within the squad.

Kingsmeadow hosts its second game this week as the Blues welcome second-placed Everton to our KT1 home for a midday kick-off. You can watch the game live on BBC Red Button from 11.50am.Like us Everton are unbeaten in the Women’s Super League and are the only team to have defeated us this season – which came in the quarter-final of last year’s FA Cup – a fixture that was originally scheduled for March before Covid-19 brought a premature conclusion to the 2019/20 domestic season. The Toffees clinched a narrow 2-1 victory at Goodison Park in September and Reiten is determined to not let that be the case again today.‘I’m very excited for the match,’ she said. ‘Everton have had a great start to the season and they beat us last time we played them, so we want to make sure we win this time.‘We were of course disappointed with the defeat in the FA Cup, but this is a new game, and in a different competition.‘When we last played them, I think we started the game well, but the difference was that they took their chances and we didn’t.‘We have to make sure that doesn’t happen this time, we have a strong team and we know we are good enough to beat them, we just have to be more ruthless in front of goal.’

While the Norway international expects a tough battle, she is confident the Blues have the quality to extend our winning streak to five in all competitions, however, the task for Reiten and her team-mates is quite simple – score more goals!‘We know we create a lot of chances, but I think we just need to score more, we need to be more effective in front of goal,’ the 26-year-old acknowledged.‘That is something we have been working on but it shows good mentality that we just keep going and going because we know the goal is eventually going to come.‘Every game is crucial and we need to try and win every single game we possibly can especially against the teams who are around us.‘Everton are in second place at the moment and it’s a very important game for both teams but we want to be the league winners again and we know what we have to do.’

Competition for a place in the Chelsea starting line-up is high, with 23 players all hungry to cement a regular spot in Emma Hayes’ team. However, Reiten, who is in her second term with the Blues is relishing the challenge and understands that success is a team effort.

‘We all want to win and we all want to become better football players. With players that Emma has brought in this season, training is so much better, the quality is so much higher than last year.‘Every day is a fight and that’s what we need to push to the next level. Of course the squad has increased and everyone wants to play but everyone can’t so it’s tough, but because we want to win everything, we need every single player.‘As long as everyone understands how important they are and that we’ll be successful if we do this together, then no one is going to stop us.'
