Guro Reiten scored an early brace against Bristol City in the Barclays Women’s Super League at the weekend and the Norwegian midfielder has spoken about Chelsea Women’s performance.
The Blues produced an outstanding display at Bristol City’s Stoke Gifford Stadium on Sunday including firing home three goals in 17 minutes. Reiten bagged the first two of the encounter, Ji So-Yun added the third and Sophie Ingle scored the fourth.
Although it was an impressive all-round performance from Emma Hayes’ side, there is no doubting that Reiten is settling in well to the English top flight.
Her work-rate and determination from the first whistle paid dividends when she won back possession and calmly finished past the Bristol goalkeeper to get us on our way.
Just seven minutes later the 25-year-old doubled our advantage having volleyed home from close range Erin Cuthbert’s delivery from the right flank to make it three goals in two appearances.
‘Maria [Thorisdottir] told Emma [Hayes] that I didn’t have a right foot, so I looked at her and was like “my right foot, it works!” even though I prefer my left,’ Reiten said when being asked about her first goal.
‘But no it was a great feeling, I think we had a great week of training. We’ve been working on a lot of things and it’s been very good. We took it out on the pitch and it’s just the beginning for us.’
Ji struck sweetly to record her first goal of the 2019/20 campaign and Ingle’s second-half tap-in was the Welsh international's first Chelsea league goal. Reiten spoke about the importance of scoring goals.
‘I want to score every time I have the chance,’ she said. ‘I think it doesn’t matter who scores as long as someone does it.
‘I’m happy to have scored two goals today, I could have scored another one but we scored two more goals and had full control of the game.’
After the international duty, the Blues return to action at Kingsmeadow where we lock horns with Arsenal. Reiten is aware of how much of a tough game this will be and understands that it is vital to keep picking up three points in order to be title contenders.
‘There are not going to be any easy games in the league, we will be ready every single time because we want to be at the top, we have to win every week.
‘Most games are going to be tight and Arsenal are a very good team, I have never played them before and I’m really excited.
‘But first 10 days with the national team, I have to do the job there because I want to play in the Euros in England in a few years so we just need to focus on that. But when we come back I don’t think anyone will need motivation to play against Arsenal.’
The Blues return to Kingsmeadow on Sunday 13 October where we host reigning WSL champions Arsenal, with a 3pm kick-off.
