Chelsea Women’s Guro Reiten expects a tough encounter as the Blues go in search of a fourth consecutive league victory when they travel to Brighton & Hove Albion on Sunday evening.

The Norwegian was part of the team who overcame Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Women’s Champions League on Thursday, where Millie Bright’s first-half strike was enough to seal a vital three points in the French capital.

Just three days after our European exploits, we return to Women’s Super League action with a trip to West Sussex to face Brighton in front of the Sky Sports cameras, where we are looking to extend our winning streak to five matches in all competitions.

General manager Paul Green said the experience within the squad was a key factor in helping the players to cope with the quick turnaround between fixtures and Reiten, who has featured in every game so far this season, believes recovery and squad depth are vital.

‘I think recovery is key, only three days between those games. We have a big squad and we need everyone so eat, sleep, go to the pool, recover and then we go again. We know Brighton is going to be a tough one.

‘We’re footballers and we love to play games and we love to win. The amount of games coming up we need every single one to step up and take responsibility for whenever they are on the pitch. That is our job and I’m excited.’

Brighton have proven tricky opposition in the past and our most recent league meeting back in January ended goalless. Reiten expects another difficult test knowing the team will need to be on top of their game to come away with three points.

‘It’s the league, it’s always tough. We know we have to play at our best if we want to win. We’re already a few points behind. I’m expecting a tough game because we have struggled with Brighton. They’ve had a few good results against us and we know we have to be on it from the off.’

In the continued absence of Emma Hayes, Reiten offered a message of support for the manager and emphasised that business continues as normal, with everybody knowing their roles and stepping up the plate.

‘Emma needs to be home with Harry and recover. Of course it’s weird being here without her. I feel like I’ve seen her every single day for the last three years. She is Chelsea but we don’t need Emma 80 per cent, we need Emma 100 per cent and hopefully when she’s back she’s ready to go.

‘We’re a big group of players and a big group of staff and now you can see everyone’s role more every day. Sometimes they are kind of behind her and now they have to step up. We just do whatever we normally do.’

Supporters who cannot attend the match can watch the Blues take on Brighton live on Sky Sports, with kick-off at Broadfield Stadium at 6.45pm (UK time)
