Malo Gusto discusses belief and comeback spirit in an exclusive interview for the matchday programme for tonight’s Champions League last-16 second leg against PSG.
The French full-back scored our first goal in the away leg in Paris last week, and despite going into this game three goals down, he insists we have to believe anything is possible at Stamford Bridge.
‘Of course, we were a little bit disappointed with the score, after the end of the game,’ he admits. ‘We knew how important it was for us to have a good game, but unfortunately we didn’t get the result we expected.
‘We’re ready for this next one, of course. We have to believe and give everything to make sure we can be proud of ourselves, and try our best, give as much as possible.
‘I think it’s a good thing for us to have the second leg at home, at Stamford Bridge. We know that anything can happen in the Champions League, and we believe in ourselves. We know, in Stamford Bridge, we can always compete, we can show a great side of ourselves and I think this would be the best time to show it.
'So we have to believe – all of us, as a club, because the fans have to be there for the team as well and we just have to keep pushing and see what happens.’
Gusto also talks about finding his goalscoring boots, after netting three times this season having never previously scored in his senior career, and gives his insight on the ever-changing role of the full-back and fluidity in modern systems.
Elsewhere in the programme, folk singer Sam Pope, of The Wellermen, tells us about his enduring love for Chelsea and a childhood spent watching Gianfranco Zola in his pomp at Stamford Bridge.
With PSG coming to town, our latest Legacy feature recalls a fight-back against the Parisiens in 2014, when Demba Ba emerged as the Chelsea hero against the side representing the city of his boyhood.
We also look back on our Champions League last-16 comeback for the ages against Napoli in 2012, as our ‘Over Land & Sea’ series takes Serbian Blues as its subject, including the significant contributions of Branislav Ivanovic, Nemanja Matic and Petar Borota to Chelsea history.
In addition to all that, there’s the latest from around the club in our regular columns, plus all the info you need ahead of the big game. So be sure to pick up your copy from the programme sellers around the stadium, or order online from our publications partner, Reach Sport.
