Malo Gusto believes Monday’s massive 6-0 victory over Everton has provided a timely confidence boost for Chelsea ahead of this weekend’s FA Cup semi-final.

The Blues made it back-to-back home wins with a brilliant performance against Everton, as Cole Palmer hit the net four times, in addition to a Nicolas Jackson strike and Alfie Gilchrist’s first senior goal for Chelsea, to brush the Toffees aside at Stamford Bridge.

That morale-boosting victory couldn’t have come at a better time, at the start of a week which ends with a trip across London to Wembley Stadium, where we will face Manchester City in the FA Cup semi-finals at 5.15pm on Saturday afternoon.

Which is why Malo Gusto believes the victory over Everton was so important, both for taking us within three points of the European qualification places in the Premier League table, and for the giving the Blues a lift ahead of our bid to reach the FA Cup final.

‘It was an important game and we were very happy to win at the Bridge. We have to get more confidence for Saturday because it’s going to be an important game for us.

‘We are young but we have talent. We just have to keep pushing together,’ explained the French full-back.

‘Saturday will be an important game for us. We know the FA Cup is the last trophy we can win.

‘So we have to work this week, with our confidence, and try to keep pushing ahead of this type of game. We are going to Wembley to win.’

Gusto and his Chelsea team-mates have added motivation for this trip to Wembley too, as they look to banish the memories of our last visit to the national stadium.

In February, we suffered a painful defeat at the same venue in the Carabao Cup final, when the match was settled by a late Liverpool winner with two minutes remaining of extra time.

‘It’s like going for revenge for us. Our last appearance at Wembley was complicated for the team.

‘Now we have another chance to win and we have to improve more, keep pushing, and try to win.’

One thing which will help Chelsea’s chances on Saturday is the excellent form of Cole Palmer, who made it hat-tricks in back-to-back home games on Monday evening, taking his goals tally to an impressive 11 from his last six matches for the Blues.

The Manchester City academy graduate got the first of those hat-tricks against Manchester United, meaning the Mancunian has now netted five goals in his four matches against teams from his home town since moving to west London in August, and has the chance to improve on that record further when he faces his former club next.

‘Cole is Cole – he is him,’ said Gusto, when asked about Palmer’s four-goal haul against Everton. ‘He is special. We are very happy to have this type of player in the team.’

Hopefully he will be even happier when the final whistle blows at Wembley on Saturday.
