A goal from Maika Hamano helped Japan record a 1-0 victory over a heavily rotated USA side in Seattle in the second of a three-game friendly series.

USA head coach Emma Hayes swapped out her entire starting XI from the side that defeated Japan 2-1 on Sunday, leaving Naomi Girma as an unused substitute and omitting Alyssa Thompson from the matchday squad, instead handing minutes to the more inexperienced members of the team.

The USWNT had enjoyed a winning run of 10 consecutive games coming into the match in Seattle, but that was halted when Chelsea's Maika Hamano – on loan at Tottenham Hotspur until the end of the season – found the back of the net in the 27th minute.

Winning back possession in midfield, Hamano started the move before Maya Hijikata played it back to her on the right-hand side of the penalty area. Cutting inside onto her left foot, Hamano then fired a shot into the top right corner as Manchester United goalkeeper Phallon Tullis-Joyce could only get her fingertips to the effort.

The 21-year-old has now netted in each of her last four starts for Japan, including scoring the winning goal in the Asian Cup final against Australia in March.

Friday sees the two sides meet again for the third and final time in this international window as the series moves on to Commerce City in Colorado.
